Myths regarding antibiotics

No doubt antibiotics are the essential component for the health and well being of the children. But is it necessary to treat all disease with antibiotics? So where’s the line between health antibiotics use and overdose? While antibiotics are great at killing harmful germs, taking antibiotics too often or for the wrong reason can also change bacteria so much that antibiotics may not work against them . This is called antibiotic resistance. That means, each time your child is given an antibiotic unnecessarily, there’s an increased chance of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Fever is not a disease, it is symptom caused due to dysregulation in the human thermoregulatory system.

Some of the common myths are:
1. It’s okay to try an antibiotics, regardless of what the cause is :
The answer is no; every medications has its own side effects. So trying an antibiotics without knowing the cause can do more harm than good. Some antibiotics causes loose stools, allergic skin rash and destroy the healthy bacteria in the gut.

2. It’s okay to stop taking antibiotics, once my child start feeling better:
No. It is always necessary to complete the course of the treatment, even if your child feels better to kill the entire bacteria. If the bacteria isn’t entirely destroyed there are chances to have a relapse of develop resistance to that particular antibiotic increasing the complications.

3. It’s okay to use someone’ else leftover antibiotics:
Never self treat your child with yours or other siblings left over antibiotics. Many disease can present differently, it is always advisable to consult your pediatrics before starting any medications.
