- Umbilical Cord
The umbilical cord typically falls off between 5-21 days of life. It should be kept clean, open, and dry. If there is pus or discharge from the cord, it may indicate an infection, and you should visit your pediatrician. - Eyes
Blocked tear ducts are common in newborns and can be suspected if the eye is continuously watery. Most cases (around 90%) resolve by one year of age. Massaging between the eye and the root of the nose can help with drainage.
Conjunctivitis, characterized by persistent stickiness with pus and discharge, is treated with ciprofloxacin or gentamycin eye drops (1 drop, 4 times a day until recovery). If the discharge persists, visit your pediatrician.
Avoid applying kajal until the baby is at least one year old.
- Nose
Mild stuffiness is common in newborns and usually resolves on its own. If needed, normal saline drops can be used for relief. - Ears
Do not use ear buds or instill any ear drops/oils without consulting your doctor. - Diaper Care
Diaper rash can be easily avoided by regularly changing the diaper and keeping the area clean and dry. Allow the area to air out for a while during diaper changes. For simple rashes, Vaseline can be used. If the rash is severe, contact your pediatrician. - Skin
Use non-medicated soaps for bathing. Normal lotions or oils can be applied to the skin after the bath. Avoid using talcum powder, as inhaling it may cause chemical pneumonia.
